Located on a mountainside near the Fuchun River in Hangzhou, China, Xiaochunshan Courtyard Restaurant reinterprets the aesthetics of traditional East Asian landscape painting through a contemporary dining space. Inspired by Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, a renowned painting by Yuan dynasty artist Huang Gongwang, DAXIANG Design Studio brings together mountains, water, rocks, and trees throughout the architecture and gardens. By preserving elements of the existing buildings and connecting adjacent underutilized spaces, the studio creates a harmonious setting where aged grey brickwork and traditional tiled roofs blend naturally into the surrounding woodland.

중국 항저우 푸춘강 인근 산자락에 자리한 샤오춘산 코트야드 레스토랑(Xiaochunshan Courtyard Restaurant)은 동양 산수화의 미학을 현대적인 다이닝 공간으로 풀어낸 프로젝트다. DAXIANG Design Studio는 원나라 화가 황공망의 대표작 '부춘산거도(富春山居圖)'에서 영감을 받아 산과 물, 바위와 나무가 어우러지는 풍경을 건축과 정원 곳곳에 섬세하게 담아냈다. 기존 건축물의 흔적을 보존하면서 주변의 유휴 공간을 연결하고, 오래된 회색 벽돌과 기와지붕을 통해 주변 산림과 조화를 이루는 공간을 완성했다. 건축이 자연을 압도하기보다 풍경의 일부로 스며들도록 한 설계는 장소가 지닌 시간과 고유한 정취를 이어간다.

At the heart of the design is the concept of “Courtyard within Courtyard.” Interconnected courtyards, covered corridors, and water features guide visitors along winding paths, revealing everchanging views of moss-covered rocks, flowing water, and sunlight filtering through the trees. This sequence of landscapes translates the depth and poetic restraint of traditional landscape painting into a spatial experience, while blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

설계의 핵심은 ‘정원 속 정원(Courtyard within Courtyard)’이라는 개념이다. 여러 개의 중정과 회랑, 수경 공간을 유기적으로 연결해 방문객이 굽이치는 길을 따라 이동하며 다채로운 풍경을 마주하도록 했다. 이끼 낀 바위와 잔잔하게 흐르는 물, 나무 사이로 스며드는 빛은 이동하는 시선에 따라 새로운 장면을 만들어내며, 산수화 특유의 여백과 깊이를 공간적으로 경험하게 한다. 실내와 실외의 경계를 유연하게 연결해 식사를 즐기는 순간에도 자연의 변화를 가까이에서 느낄 수 있도록 했다.
